Crate Brewery was established in July 2012 around the time of the Olympics, when Hackney Wick was awash with change.
Set in a wonderful old building that was first a print factory and then less romantically a squat, this canal side brewery produces a fantastic range of beers, both core and seasonal, as well as a limited run Brewers Tap range.
Crate beers are innovative, packed full of flavour and remain accessible.
Set up by Kiwi siblings Tom and Jess and ex-BBC radio producer Neil, Crate
has gone from being a small 1400L a week brewery supplying their own bar to a 16000L operation that supplies some of the most prestigious retailers and bars around the country. Inspired by the local artistic community, once the most creatively active in Europe, the founders threw open the doors to the locals to help them design and fit the interior. The resulting pallet, bed-spring and railway sleeper filled space was not only necessarily cheap(!), but a perfect reflection of the larger DIY ethos of the area.
Initially consisting of a handful of locals, the team has now expanded to well over 70 staff, an indication of Crate's rapid expansion which includes the cocktail boat the Alfred LeRoy and warehouse-come-weekend-party venue Mick's Garage. Crate is still very much a family however, those who work together play together. Their fun and caring way of life and work is at the core of what they do.
