When Don José Antonio de Cuervo was issued a land grant by King Ferdinand VI of Spain in the town of Tequila, Jalisco, his family founded the Taberna de Cuervo, the farm where they would cultivate and harvest the flowering blue agave plant.
In 1795, his son, José María, secured a permit from King Carlos IV to start producing 'mezcal de Tequila' commercially. The family then founded what is Latin America's oldest surviving distillery of La Rojeña in Tequila in 1812.
It may seem like late timing, but when Jose Cuervo started putting its tequila in glass bottles in 1880, it was actually the first tequila company to do so. Demand was so high that the only way to keep the good stuff glowing was by parcelling it out, and within 20 years the Jose Cuervo brand was established.
To the delight of tequila lovers north of the border, glass made the liquid easier to transport and export. The brand was quick to capitalise on the cocktail by launching its first-ever US ad campaign in 1945 with the slogan 'Margarita: It's more than a girl's name'.
Just like Champagne can only be made in France, or Scotch can only be made in Scotland, as of 1974, for a spirit to be called "tequila" it had to be made in certain states of Mexico. Jose Cuervo was the brand of choice when the tequila sunrise became wildly popular.
Today, it's no surprise that Jose Cuervo is the most awarded family of Tequila in history. With recipes passed down and upheld by a family of entrepreneurs, inventors, and risk-takers, Jose Cuervo remains no.1 in the on-trade with growth +3.9%.
The Especial Silver offers notes of black pepper, citrus and roasted agave for a traditional experience, whereas the Especial Reposadohas a vanilla and caramel blend through being aged in American White Oak barrels.
