Grape info: A South African speciality, Pinotage was bred from Cinsaut and Pinot Noir Vines at the University of Stellenbosch in 1925. It’s fair to say that its wines have divided opinions ever since but also that the quality has unquestionably improved, particularly since the inauguration of the Pinotage Association in the 1990s. Styles can range from light to heavy, the best displaying fresh red fruits, spice and a meaty, savoury dimension.

Extended barrel aging in less influential second and third use barrels ensures Pinotage’s fresh fruit profile is not overcome whilst adding a layer of complexity.

Tasting note: Bright plums and cherries on the nose with a hint of spice. The palate is full-bodied with supportive tannins and notes of blackberry, fig and a meaty, savoury note.
